A must-see for any visitor to Nauvoo, Illinois, is the Joseph Smith Historic Site. Owned and maintained byCommunity of Christ, this wonderful facility features displays, artifacts, a room for video presentations and a little gift shop.
Those who wish to visit the Joseph Smith Homestead and Mansion House (both residences of Joseph and Emma Smith) begin their tour here. The Prophet and his family lived in the Homestead from 1839-1843. They then moved to the Mansion House where Joseph lived for about the last 10 months of his life.
Trained hosts provide excellent interpretation as visitors go through these original homes as well as see the Nauvoo House or Riverside Mansion (from the outside only) and what was once the stable area used to house livestock of Joseph Smith and others.
Community of Christ historic sites coordinator, Lachlan Mackay, oversees the Joseph Smith Historic Site. Lach, as he is known by many, has the respect of countless visitors because of the scholarly and respectful way in which he and his staff interpret Community of Christ sites and artifacts. Community of Christ notes on its website that Lach holds the priesthood office of seventy with the added title of apostle designate.
There is no charge to enter the visitors’ center, view the orientation video or see the museum exhibits. There is a small preservation fee per person to take the guided tour of the Smith homes. The center is located at 865 Water Street in Nauvoo. They may be contacted by telephone at 217-453-2246 or by email atJSHS@frontiernet.net.
